The Culebra archipelago is a unique ecosystem comprising 23 islands approximately 17 miles east of Puerto Rico. Until 1975 the archipelago was a primary bombing site for the US Navy. The use as a firing range ceased after 1975 and presently approximately one quarter of the archipelago land mass is part of the National Wildlife Refuge. Numerous species of migratory birds, marine mammals, and sea turtles use the archipelago as a breeding, nesting, or foraging site. Many of these species, such as hawksbill, green, and leatherback sea turtles are either threatened or endangered. |
