« Faculty Position in Fish Molecular Virology

The Department of Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine at The University of Georgia, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position focused on the molecular biology of new and emerging viral diseases of fish. The position is offered at the rank of Assistant Professor to a qualified individual with strong commitment to research.

The Department of Pathology, in cooperation with the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, offers a comprehensive diagnostic service to aquatic animal veterinarians and public aquaria. The successful applicant will work cooperatively with and support the diagnostic activities of a fish pathologist. Areas of research will include the characterization of emerging aquatic animal viruses and the development of broadly applicable molecular based diagnostic methodologies. Demonstrated expertise in the areas of metagenomics and microbial phylogenetics is essential, as is a working knowledge of fish diseases and regulatory aspects of international commerce in aquatic animals. Experience with herpes and iridoviral diseases of fish and amphibians is highly desirable.

Applicants must possess a DVM or equivalent degree, PhD, and have completed a minimum of one year of post doctoral training involving fish molecular virology. Eligibility for faculty licensure in the State of Georgia is required. Primary responsibilities will be the development of a sustained independent research program and the teaching of graduate students and pathology residents with interests in diseases of fish and molecular diagnostics.

The University of Georgia is located in Athens, a vibrant community of 100,000 located in the wooded Piedmont hills of northeast Georgia. Offering the amenities of a cosmopolitan city, the surrounding area also offers the choice of a more rural lifestyle. Athens is located 1½ hours from Atlanta, two hours from the Appalachian Trail, and four hours from the Atlantic coast.
