Head, Department of Pathology. The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia invites applications and nominations for a full-time academic position as Head of the Department of Pathology. The Department is seeking individuals with a solid foundation in pathology that are effective academic and administrative leaders and have a passion for guiding continued development of excellence in instruction, diagnostic service, and research.
The successful applicant will join a team of 17 pathologists, as well as residents, research scientists, and graduate students with interests including the epidemiology and pathogenesis of infectious disease in food-producing, avian, and aquatic animals, molecular diagnostics, genomics and proteomics, cancer pathobiology, neuropathogenesis of rabies, soft tissue physiology and repair, and emergency preparedness.
University resources such as the high containment Animal Health Research Center, the Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences, Biomedical and Health Sciences Institute, the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center, Center for Food Safety, as well as the Office of Research Services provide access to state of the art facilities and research support services.
Proximity to and extensive interaction with nearby facilities such as the Centers for Disease Control, Yerkes Primate Center, Atlanta Zoo, Georgia Aquarium, USDA-ARS laboratories, and USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service Laboratories, ensure a broad range of collaborative possibilities.
The faculty in the department reside in the academic unit of the College of Veterinary Medicine, at the Athens Diagnostic Laboratory adjacent to the main CVM building, and at the Diagnostic and Investigational Laboratory in Tifton Georgia.
The University of Georgia is located in Athens, a vibrant community of 100,000 located in the wooded Piedmont hills of northeast Georgia. Offering the amenities of a cosmopolitan city, the surrounding area also offers a wide variety of lifestyle choices. Athens is located 1 hour from Atlanta and its international airport, two hours from the Appalachian Trail, and four hours from the Atlantic coast.
Responsibilities of the Department include instruction of veterinary and graduate students and residents, provision of diagnostic pathology service to both the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital as well as practicing veterinarians through the state Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories, and the pursuit of both basic and applied research.
The Head is the Departmental representative to the College's Administrative Council and interacts with other department Heads and service chiefs to implement decisions affecting the College. The Head is also the Department's chief administrative officer with responsibility for the instructional and service programs of the Department, administrative, budgetary, and promotion decisions, and providing strong leadership in the development of instruction, research and public service. The Head reports directly to the Dean.
Requirements for the position include the DVM (or equivalent) degree and/or a doctor of philosophy (PhD or equivalent). Desirable qualifications include pathology specialty board certification, previous administrative experience, and experience with program development in pathology-related instruction, research or service. Highly qualified applicants will possess a strong record of academic leadership, administrative experience, strong communication and leadership skills, and evidence of active participation in pathology teaching, service, or research.
