About Pathheads

The Student Chapter of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists at the University of Georgia is more commonly referred as the PathHeads. As of September 2009, the chapter has 143 members, including our chapter officers. The chapter is advised by Drs. Paige Carmichael, Bruce LeRoy, and Kaori Sakamoto.

With the help of our faculty advisors and the pathology service department, our members are offered the opportunity to attend necropsy rounds throughout the year. Earlier this year, we were also offered a porcine necropsy wet lab, in which our members participated in necropsy and took a tour of UGA’s veterinary histology lab. Our members are also notified of pathology seminars and encouraged to get involved with the pathology department outside of the classroom.

The pathology club also participates in fundraisers to finance meetings and other PathHeads activities. Last year a Halloween baked goods and t-shirt sale occurred in the fall semester. And this year a PathHeads table was also present for freshmen orientation in Spring 2009 where t-shirts and candy were sold and information about the club and its interests were shared with members of the local community and incoming freshmen.

Pathheads are also encouraged to participate in the annual meetings of the ACVP. For the 2008 ACVP annual meeting, the University of Georgia was able to send three PathHeads members: Elijah Edmondson, Caroline Salter, and Phil Good. Elijah Edmondson presented a poster at the convention. Travel funds covered transportation to San Antonio, Texas, and lodging.
