| Rinderpest is caused by a member of the genus Morbillivirus,
family Paramyxoviridae. Morbidity with rinderpest can reach 100% and
mortality may be 50%. Rinderpest is enzootic in northeastern and equatorial Africa.
The disease affects primarily cattle; sheep and goats can be carriers.
Diagnosis is done by isolation of the virus or agar gel immunodiffusion.
