AVIAN POLYOMAVIRUS (APV)

That’s correct! Avian polyomavirus (APV) intranuclear inclusion bodies are generally mildly basophilic to amphophilic. Affected nuclei usually are enlarged, but are smaller than those containing avian adenovirus inclusions.

Organs usually affected in budgerigars include the heart, spleen, liver, intestines, and skin. Inclusions in non-budgerigar psittacine birds may be observed primarily in the spleen, liver, and kidneys. Other organs may be affected in psittacine birds.

Non-psittacine birds may exhibit confluent hepatic and splenic necrosis. In these birds, intranuclear inclusion bodies in H&E-stained tissue sections may be infrequent to absent. Use of a more "generic" probe for APV will detect the viral nucleic acid in these birds.

This particular case was confirmed by DNA in situ hybridization using an APV-specific DNA probe.
