PSITTACINE BEAK AND FEATHER DISEASE (PBFD) VIRUS

That’s correct! Psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD) virus can produce both intracytoplasmic and intranuclear inclusion bodies, usually in the feathers, thymus, and bursa of uninfected birds. Other tissues also may be infected including liver, spleen, and intestines.

The intracytoplasmic inclusions usually are observed in infected macrophages. Intranuclear inclusions may be observed in feather follicle epithelium as well as other epithelial cells of body.

Other common findings in affected feathers are ballooning degeneration of follicular epithelial cells and pulp necrosis with or without infiltrates of heterophils and macrophages. Hemorrhage also may be observed within the pulp cavity.
