International Livestock Research Institute - Nairobi, Kenya

Dates:
Summer

Funding:
Student pays airfare
Modest stipend paid by International Livestock Research Institute
Housing supplied on ILRI campus

Description of the experience:
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is a multilaterally funded research program focusing on two critical disease issues of cattle in Africa – East Coast fever and trypanosomiasis. ILRI hires only 2-3 veterinary students every summer. It is a very competitive program. The student is placed in the laboratory with a senior scientist and, under the guidance of the senior scientist, conducts research on one of these two diseases. ILRI is located in Nairobi and there are opportunities for exploring the culture and environment of Kenya during this program.

Expectation of the student:
Students are expected to have some interest in learning research techniques and exploring mechanisms of disease. There is a possibility that there may be funds to pay the student, after his or her return, to develop a web-based interactive program on ILRI and the two diseases studied there (these funds will come from UGA).

To apply:
This is a competitive program run by ILRI. If interested, see Dr. Corrie Brown, Pathology Department, Room 141, who will contact individuals at ILRI and help you with the application process.
