Graduate & Residency Programs | Ophthalmology

The Degree Program for the Residency/Master of Science in Ophthalmology at the University Of Georgia College Of Veterinary Medicine School is designed as a focused, flexible to train clinical ophthalmologists that can conduct patient-oriented research that is of exemplary quality. The curriculum accommodates clinicians' busy schedules. The degree requires a minimum of 2 years of coursework, and the entire program is four years in length.

Program Description

This Master’s Degree Program consists of a minimum of 20 hrs of coursework including required courses, and any other courses decided on by the committee. Research will be conducted on clinical ophthalmology topics in the Department of Pathology with a Departmental faculty advisor that is a member of the University graduate faculty.

This is intended to be a four year program; the first two years are predominately class work, pathology diagnostics and research and the last two will be predominately research and clinical training. During the first and second years the student is in charge of trimming and reading cases for the UGA Ophthalmic biopsy service. The student must attend Ophthalmic Pathology rounds and journal club held every other week. The student is required to make a minimum of two presentations at regional or national meetings.

Coursework for Master's Degree

All students are expected to take

  • Microscopic Pathology VPAT 8100,
  • two statistics courses STAT 6210 and STAT 6220, or other equivalent course,
  • Cellular Pathology VPAT 8020, and
  • a minimum of 12 hours of Biopsy practicum VPAT 7200.  

In addition to the 20 credit hours for the Clinical Research Curriculum, each student will be required to complete an additional 26 credit hours, including research and thesis hours, for a total of 46 credit hours.

Mentorship

Participants in the Program will work jointly with two different advisors

  • a Small Animal Program mentor who provides clinical expertise and
  • a Research mentor from the Pathology Department to provide mentorship in the specific area of clinical research.
