Animal Doc | Why Should I Spay or Neuter My Pet?

 Behavioral Benefits - Cats

Lots of people love cats because they have such interesting personalities. They do, however, have some quirks that can be no fun for an owner.

Some of these personality traits can be avoided if the cat is spayed or neutered.

Some owners complain that their male cats leave little messes around the house. This is called "marking." If a cat is neutered, he is far less likely to mark in the house.

If a male cat is not neutered, he may want to roam around the neighborhood. As he wanders around, he may meet other cats. Often times, cats who do not know each other will fight, and they can really hurt themselves.

Some neighborhood cats never visit the veterinarian and may have cat diseases. They can make a roaming housecat very sick if he plays with them.

Probably the greatest danger to a wandering cat, though, is traffic. Neutered cats are less likely to stray far from home.

Female cats go "into heat" at various times during the year. This means that they get very loud and call out. This can drive their owners crazy! Spaying a cat prevents her from going "into heat."
