| Controlling an outbreak: | |
| OIE must be notified of the problem within 48 hours and they in turn disseminate the information globally. If animal agriculture represents a significant part of the national economy, the affected country usually institutes immediate and drastic control measures. | ![]() |
| The disease must be tracked and all potentially exposed susceptible animals must be slaughtered and then burned or buried, with certain regulations. | ![]() |
| Transport of animals and animal products, including milk, is halted in affected areas and international export of these products is also stopped. | ![]() |
| Movement of humans, equipment, all materials including garbage and non-susceptible animals must also be closely monitored and disinfected regularly. Free roaming animals on the farm such as dogs, cats, deer and even rodents should be controlled. | ![]() |
| Infected farms and everything that leaves those farms, including people and vehicles, must be disinfected using an approved disinfectant. It is crucial to spray tires and the underside of all vehicles leaving an infected area. | |
