Economic Impact | Botulism |
|
The control of botulism through proper management and vaccination has reduced the occurance of outbreaks in cattle. Birds can be infected with botulism and act as vectors to other animals. Even though birds are not vaccinated, proper disposal of carcasses in poultry houses and testing litter prior to feeding to cattle can greatly reduce the incidence. Proper removal of cattle carcasses on grazing pastures can also reduce the incidence. In the event of a breakout, mortality rate is 100%. The economic impact has the potential to be devestating if not properly managed. Because the most common transmission of infection is ingestion of the spores, the incidence of widespread outbreak is less likely to occur. |
