Professor, DVM (1974) The University of Georgia, PhD (1982) The University of Georgia, Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists
Research Interests: Emerging infectious diseases of zoo and exotic animals, molecular diagnosis and pathogenesis of avian and reptilian viral diseases, Pelger-Huet anomaly, and hematologic neoplasia
Teaching: Teaching: Clinical laboratory medicine, advanced veterinary hematology, advanced clinical chemistry, microscopic pathology, and surgical oncology
Dr. Latimer and members of the Emerging Diseases Research Group have been involved in the laboratory diagnosis of emerging infectious diseases in zoo and exotic animals for the past two decades. In addition, Dr. Latimer has been involved in the development of molecular diagnostic tests to detect circovirus, avian polyomavirus, avian adenovirus, avian herpesvirus (Pacheco's parrot disease virus), parrot papillomavirus, West Nile virus, and ophidian paramyxovirus. Dr. Latimer's current research has focused on viral diseases of exotic and free ranging birds, reptiles, and fish. In addition, Dr. Latimer has a long-standing interest in Pelger-Huet anomaly, which is associated with nuclear hyposegmentation of granulocytes and monocytes in the blood.
