You are practicing in southwest Georgia. You do not usually see the pigs in the area, but Dr. Suwee is out of commission with the flu. One of his small-scale local farmers has been referred to you about some lame pigs. Panic sets in. You have heard about pigs in books, but have yet to actually encounter one.

You arrive at the farm, and visit with the owner.   From where you are standing by your truck, you can see that some of the pigs have lesions on their snouts.
Oh no, lameness and snout lesions - what are some rule-outs?
  • Foot-and-mouth Disease (FMD)
  • Swine Vesicular Disease (SVD)
  • Vesicular Stomatitis (VS)
  • Vesicular Exanthema of Swine (VES)
  • Photosensitization
  • Foot rot and other injuries

You begin interviewing the producer to take your history.....

Okay, time now to examine the situation in earnest.  Pull out your thermometer, stethescope, rubber boots and coveralls and begin your clinical examination.

Now that you have seen the premise, examined the animals, and reviewed each of the vesicular diseases, what are your conclusions?
