| We next traveled to La Plata, a smaller city in which
one of the veterinary schools is located. We toured the
school extensively and met with many of the professors
and students. We also visited the local racetrack, where
we discussed racing issues with the track veterinarians. |
| During our
time at the La Plata veterinary school, we learned that
any student who wishes to become a veterinarian will
be accepted to the University at the expense of the government.
The result is an enrollment of 10 times the number of
students than we have here in the US, and consequently,
a dearth of resources. This was a huge concern for many
of the professors we spoke with, and a heated debate
among the students. |
| The drop out rate is extremely high for veterinary
schools, and of those that remain, there is little personal
interaction with the doctors. A students ability
to learn how to deal with potentially disastrous veterinary
issues is greatly decreased in this type of environment. |
