Research Interests: Neuropathology, animal models of human disease (mucopolysaccharidosis IIIA carbohydrate-deficient glycoprotein syndrome, globoid cell leukodystrophy)
Teaching: Inherited diseases, general pathology ophthalmic, digestive, and integumentary pathology. Dr. Carmichael's main research emphasis has been on a group of inherited neurological diseases in dogs, including hepatocerebellar degeneration (HCD) of Bernese Mountain dogs and a cerebellar ataxia syndrome affecting Jack Russell terriers. Her research group has already developed a test for globoid cell leukodystrophy in Irish Setters and for mucopolysaccharidosis IIIA in wire haired dachshunds. Her studies in inherited neurological disease also extend to therapeutics and she is investigating the use of xenophobic stem cell transplants in a caprine model of MDSIIID. Her research group was the first to describe FeLV-associated myelopathy in cats.
