RESEARCH INTERESTS
Neural control of fluid balance and appetite
Research in our laboratory focuses on central neural control of food and water intake. We are particularly interested in neural pathways that are altered in obese states and how these alterations contribute to obesity. These studies focus on how information from organs outside the brain (eg. gut and fat) signal the brain to terminate energy intake and promote energy expenditure. Of particular interest are those signals that contribute to enhanced intake of highly palatable foods. These studies utilize techniques ranging from molecular biology to behavioral studies in rats, mice, dogs and pigs. We collaborate closely in the Departments of Physiology and Pharmacology, Foods and Nutrition, Animal and Dairy Science, Psychology and Kinesiology.
Our laboratory is also involved in the Interdisciplinary Toxicology and Neuroscience Programs at the University of Georgia.
