Faculty Information
Required Forms for Extramural Funded Projects
Mission
To facilitate college faculty members in planning, funding and completing clinical research projects or basic science projects which require clinic resources (equipment, facilities, or technical support).
Information for Principal Investigators
If you are interested in doing clinical research there are many ways to get involved. You can either apply for research funds within the college that have been donated, or seek extramural funding from private sponsors.
Research Proposals
All research proposals must be submitted to Dr. Steve Budsberg, Director of Clinical Research, accompanied by the Clinical Research Registration form [Word .doc]. Please refer to the internal or external proposal guidelines.
The Clinical Research Committee (CRC) will then review each project for approval. The committee will then recommend and facilitate the necessary action steps needed to move the project forward (ie. hospital board approval, recommendation of funding if required, etc.). The principal investigator will be notified by letter from the committee once the proposal is accepted.
For intramural projects, the investigator will agree to provide quarterly updates for the CRC regarding study progress. This information will be used for annual reports, alumni relations, etc. and will inform donors about their donations.
Extramurally funded research projects require a contract between the University of Georgia Research Foundation (UGARF) and the sponsor. Once you receive approval from the CRC, the proposal must be submitted to Sponsored Programs. Each proposal must be accompanied by a proposal cover letter, proposal transmittal, and appropriate budget.
If the project involves hazardous materials, the biosafety form must also be completed. Projects involving the purchase of research animals must complete the Animal Use Proposal which will be reviewed by our Internal Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
Follow-through
Once your proposal is ready for submission to Sponsored Programs, Renita Anthony in the Dean's Office will review the budget for accuracy. For guidelines on how to charge appropriately for your project, please refer to the budget guidelines in the internal or external guideline documents. After this step study proposals are sent to our Grants Specialist, Kay Janney, at 614 Boyd Graduate Research Center. She can be reached by e-mail at kkjanney@uga.edu or by phone: 706.542.5959.
The Grants Officer will work with UGARF legal department drafting a study agreement with the sponsor. This may take 6-8 weeks. Once the contract is signed, an acceptance letter is sent to the investigator from Sponsored Programs indicating the award amount and date of project initiation. Contracts and Grants will assign a project name and account number to the study. The PI can then expect to set up an initial site visit with the sponsor and begin enrolling clients.
At the termination of each project, a short abstract or summary of study results will be due to the CRC, with a final deliverable report due to Sponsored Programs.
