Dr. Amelia Woolums participates in the FAHM mission by teaching veterinary courses in food animal respiratory disease and infectious disease. She also undertakes research to improve our understanding of how the immune system of cattle responds to infection, and how vaccination can improve immunity. Respiratory disease prevention through management and vaccination is a major focus of Dr. Woolums' research; she is also working on developing methods to improve immunity in young calves. Projects Dr. Woolums is currently working on with other FAHM members and collaborators outside FAHM include the following:
1. research to determine whether vaccines given into the nose (intranasal) are as effective as vaccines given by injection when administered to young calves;
2. research to determine how maternal cells in colostrum affect the resistance of calves to BVDV infection;
3. research to determine how bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) affects the cells lining the airways of cattle, and to determine how airway cell responses change the immune response to BRSV infection;
4. research to determine if treatment with small inhibiting ribonucleic acid (siRNA) molecules can suppress BRSV infection and related diseae in cattle, and
5. research to determine if intestinal parasites affect the ability of cattle to respond to vaccines for respiratory viruses.
