Light Sources

Light Sources are high intensity such as zenon or halogen. Lower wattage are adequate to illuminate small areas such as the ear for video-ostoscopy, but larger areas and especially darker fields required much more wattage. Most laparoscopy and thoracoscopy are very adequately illuminated with a 175 watts halogen light source. The light is transmitted to the telescope via a light guide cable, which consists of many continuous fibers. Broken fibers can produce a black spot and poor illumination can also be produced when the ends are not clean. Light intensity is adjusted to completely illuminate the field without producing bright reflections.
