Calla

Calla
  • Patient:
Calla, 3 year old female spayed Lab cross.

  • Presenting complaint:
Attacked by another dog yesterday; the wounds were cleaned and closed over two Penrose drains during emergency surgery last night.

  • Clinical care before endoscopy:
Overnight, the dog pulled one and half drains. No drains could be seen exiting the wounds, and radiographs revealed that a portion of a drain was within the wound. Blind grasping with a alligator forceps was non-productive.

  • Endoscopic procedure:
A 2.7 mm, 18 cm long arthroscope was passed through the drain exit site. The Penrose drain was quickly identified and removed with the alligator forceps.

  • Benefits of using endoscopy:
The scope permitted quick removal, avoiding an open surgical procedure of a day-old wound.
