Watson
- Patient:
Watson, 5 year old male neutered domestic long-haired cat.
- Presenting complaint:
Bloody discharge from and scratching at left ear. First seen by referring veterinarian for this problem one year previously. The owner believed the cat was blind in the left eye.
- Diagnostic studies before endoscopy:
Pre-operative blood work that was within normal limits. An ophthalmology consult confirmed that that the left eye was non-functional and they recommended transpalpebral enucleation.
- Endoscopic procedure:
Video-otoscopy to diagnose inflammatory polyp. The cat was then operated by a traditional ventral bulla osteotomy. To assist in doing a thorough cleaning of the middle ear, a 2.7 mm, 18 cm long arthroscope was used while lavaging and removing the polyp from the middle ear. The left eye was also removed.
- Benefits of using endoscopy:
Video-otoscopy produced excellent images and biopsy samples of the polyp. Intra-operative use of the scope improved evaluation and polyp removal during the ventral bulla osteotomy.
