Snowball

Snowball
  • Patient:
Snowball, 1 year old female minature Poodle.

  • Presenting complaint:
Head tilt to the right and shaking head. Five months previously, 28 fox tails had been removed from the middle ears.

  • Diagnostic studies before endoscopy:
Cytology from an ear swab contained bacteria (cocci and bacilli).

  • Endoscopic procedure:
Video-otoscopy was done and more foxtails were found in both ears. The tympanic membrane (ear drum) was ruptured by the pack of foxtails. Foxtails were removed revealing that both middle ears were filled with hyperplastic tissue. This tissue was also removed using the otoscope and forceps.

  • Benefits of using endoscopy:
Video-otoscopy permitted examination and cleaning the middle ear without surgery. The middle ear condition could probably be managed with regular examination and medical treatment, assuming that Snowball does not acquire more foxtails.
