Ginger

Ginger
  • Patient:
Ginger, 10 year old male cocker spaniel.

  • Presenting complaint:
Discharge from left ear with long-term treatment of chronic ear disease. Ginger previously had a recurrent high-grade sarcoma over the left shoulder that had been treated with cobalt radiation, and also an anal sac adenoma removed by excision.

  • Diagnostic studies before endoscopy:
There was bilateral mandibular lymph node enlargement, and fine-needle aspirates did not identify cancer cells. Culture of the ear showed a high growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Pre-anesthetic blood work was within normal limits.

  • Endoscopic procedure:
Video-otoscopy identified a mass encroaching on the ear lumen. A biopsy found it to be a ceruminous gland adenoma. Excision of the tumor by a total ear canal ablation and lateral bulla osteotomy was done.

  • Benefits of using endoscopy:
Video-otoscopy and biopsy identified the cause of the chronic ear infections. Excision of this tumor is usually curative.
