Daisy

Daisy
  • Patient:
Daisy, 8 month old spayed female mixed-breed dog.

  • Presenting complaint:
Regurgitation several days each week. The signs are typical of esophageal disease. The dog was smaller than its littermates, but did have good body condition.

  • Diagnostic studies before endoscopy:
Thoracic radiograph revealed a dilated esophagus with a narrowing at the fifth thoracic space.

  • Endoscopic procedure:
Thoracoscopy using 4 small trocar openings was used to evaluate and identify a stricture about the esophagus at the level of the fifth space. A fibrous band (persistent right aortic arch) was identified and resected using a ligasure forceps. The esophagus was dilated by passing an esophageal tube.

  • Benefits of using endoscopy:
This minimally invasive surgery avoided an open thoracoctomy. A chest tube was placed. Daisy did very well after surgery and began to gain weight.
