PROGRAM OF STUDY

The Program of Study is a formal statement of the course work for a graduate degree. It need not include all the course work taken at the University, but it should be carefully designed to reflect the interests of the student as well as the requirements of the advisory committee, the Department and the Graduate School. Only graduate courses may be included in the Program of Study, and the grades must be C or above with a minimum GPA of 3.0. A grade of C- will not be accepted by the Graduate School.

Courses should be listed in the order taken. No courses used for another degree may be listed. The MS Program of Study must consist of at least 30 credit hours. Specific requirements for Infectious Diseases:

  • At least 3 hours of thesis (IDIS 7300)
  • No more than 6 hours of research (IDIS 7000)
  • At least 12 hours open only to graduate students, not co-listed with undergraduate courses
  • IDIS 7000 and 7300 cannot be included in the 12 hours
  • 1 hour of departmental seminar every semester (IDIS 8160)
  • 1 hour of a Journal Club every semester.

The required curriculum for Masters students can be viewed here.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE

An MS advisory committee consists of a major professor and two additional members.

Major Professor
Only faculty who have full or joint/adjunct appointment in Infectious Diseases and who are also members of the UGA Graduate Faculty can serve as a major professor for an MS in Infectious Diseases. This person chairs the advisory committee. Major Professors are expected to provide research supervision as well as the necessary funding to carry out the experiments for students under their guidance.

Committee Members
The student's advisory committee members are selected in agreement between the student and the major professor. The role of advisory committee members is to provide guidance and support about research and course work performed by the student. If the major professor is not a core member of the department's faculty, then the rest of the advisory committee must hold full appointments in Infectious Diseases. A majority of members must also be full members of the UGA Graduate Faculty.

RESEARCH PROJECT

The major professor and the student will plan the research project to be completed with the approval of the rest of the advisory committee members. Students in the MS program are required to submit one first author publication in a peer-reviewed journal before their final defense. The submitted publication has to be an original research article. This requirement will only be circumvented under extraordinary circumstances and with the approval of all other members of the advisory committee.

PROSPECTUS

The Department does not require MS students to complete a prospectus.

ADMISSION TO CANDIDACY

Admission to candidacy is not required for an MS.

APPLICATION FOR GRADUATION

An MS student must submit a completed application form directly to the Graduate School before the deadline. Students should check the exact deadline date for a given target graduation date. The application must be submitted no later than two full semesters prior to anticipated graduation.

THESIS DEFENSE AND FINAL ORAL EXAMINATION

The announcement for the thesis defense must be posted at least two weeks ahead of time in the Department to allow the rest of faculty and students in Infectious Diseases to be present. To this end, the student will be expected to schedule a seminar room within the College of Veterinary Medicine, preferably in room # 363. The major professor must approve the thesis before it is submitted to the committee.

Following the oral presentation the student should be prepared to defend the contents of the thesis before any member of the Department as well as in an oral examination administered by the advisory committee.

The Graduate School requires all theses be submitted electronically. Deadlines can be found here. The Final Defense Approval form and an electronic submission of the corrected thesis must be submitted no later than two weeks prior to graduation. A graduate student may not submit a thesis to the Graduate School for format checking or the dean's approval between the last day of classes and late registration of the following term.

FINAL CLEARANCE FOR GRADUATION

All requirements for the degree must be completed and reported to the Graduate School no later than one week prior to graduation. A student must enroll for a minimum of three hours of credit the semester in which he/she completes degree requirements.

All forms are downloadable from the Graduate School website. Once signed and completed, the student must turn all forms into the graduate assistant who will make copies and forward to the Graduate School:
