The Anesthesiology Department
The Anesthesiology Department of the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital provides anesthesia services for large and small animals, including exotic animals, for medical, surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures. The patients are evaluated whenever possible the day before anesthesia is required and the most appropriate anesthetic management is selected based on the individual's problems and the procedure to be performed.
We also provide emergency anesthesia service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The supervising anesthesiologists are board certified diplomates by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists. We have active anesthesiology residency and intern programs, and trained veterinary anesthesia technicians. Our anesthetic management incorporates state-of-the-art equipment, including anesthetic gas analyzers, capnographs, blood pressure monitors and mechanical ventilators. We are highly responsive to pain management in animals and incorporate techniques of specific nerve blocks and continuous intravenous infusions of analgesic drugs in our anesthetic protocols and during recovery from anesthesia.

Other veterinarians on the service include internal medicine residents and small animal interns. Cases are often admitted by interns and residents, who will then have the most contact with the pets' owners.
