The Anesthesiology Department

The Anesthesiology Department of the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital provides anesthesia services for large and small animals, including exotic animals, for medical, surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures. The patients are evaluated whenever possible the day before anesthesia is required and the most appropriate anesthetic management is selected based on the individual's problems and the procedure to be performed.

We also provide emergency anesthesia service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The supervising anesthesiologists are board certified diplomates by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists. We have active anesthesiology residency and intern programs, and trained veterinary anesthesia technicians. Our anesthetic management incorporates state-of-the-art equipment, including anesthetic gas analyzers, capnographs, blood pressure monitors and mechanical ventilators. We are highly responsive to pain management in animals and incorporate techniques of specific nerve blocks and continuous intravenous infusions of analgesic drugs in our anesthetic protocols and during recovery from anesthesia.

For more information on the anesthesiology service, visit their Web site.

The Exotic Animal, Wildlife & Zoological Medicine Service

Large exotic or zoo species (including alpacas, llamas, camels, elephants, carnivores etc) are coordinated between two separate services: Exotics/Zoo and Large Animal medicine. The exotics/zoo faculty are experts in non-domesticated species; the large animal medicine clinicians are experts in large animal medicine. Cases are only seen by appointment after consultation between owner and faculty. Cases are admitted and a student takes a history prior to examination. Depending upon the size and nature of the animal, sedation or anesthesia may be required before any physical examination is possible. Total appointment time for an outpatient visit can vary between 2 to 5 hours, depending on the extent of problems. All zoo species must be presented in a secure, locked, animal-proof enclosure within which the animal can be maintained for up to 24 hrs if necessary. If legal ownership requires a USDA license then this should be presented upon admission. For more information on exotic animal endoscopy and minimally invasive surgery, please see http://www.vet.uga.edu/zoo. For exotic animal endoscopy training course information and registration, please contact the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.

Please see the Georgia Department of Natural Resources web site for more information regarding exotics pets.
