Toxicology

Requests for tests (assays) for toxins suspected of being related to animal deaths or illnesses can, in general, be classified into three categories: (1) Farm or Industrial chemicals, (2) Metals or Metalloids, and (3) Mycotoxins.

Toxicology problems related to farm animals are usually related to the misuse/mismanagement of farm chemicals or to consumption of plant materials that contain toxins.

Small or companion animals can also be poisoned by chewing on toxic plants, but sadly enough, malicious poisonings with farm or industrial chemicals are our major problem.

Plant Identification (includes algae, "mushrooms", fungi)
Submit entire plant including flowers, seed pod and roots. Formalin fixed specimens lose their color making ID difficult. Please submit some fresh specimens wrapped in paper, not plastic, and refrigerated. Submit samples to Tifton Diagnostic Laboratory. Samples may also be submitted to The University of Georgia Herbarium in Athens. Contact 706.542.3732 for further information.
