User's Responsiblity Concerning Hazards

Certain research and instructional uses of animals create hazards for people and other animals. Users are responsible for hazards created by their work and should be aware of all possible implications.

Users must:

  • utilize procedures designed to protect people and animals;

  • keep AR personnel informed of potential hazards associated with their use of animals and recommend appropriate safety procedures when indicated; and

  • post appropriate warning signs.

Whenever a research or teaching program requires the use of biological materials potentially dangerous to man and/or animals, the user and the AR Director must work with the University Committee on Biosafety to plan for special facilities and procedures needed for biological safety.

Use of radioactive materials or any device which produces ionizing radiation as a by-product is governed by federal and state laws. Whenever a research or instructional program requires the use of radioactive materials or radiation-producing devices, the user, the Radiation Safety Office, and the AR Director must plan for special facilities and procedures needed for radiobiological safety.
