Accreditation
The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine is pleased to announce that in 2006, it once again received full accreditation from the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education.
The AVMA COE uses clearly defined standards for accreditation to evaluate D.V.M. education programs, including areas of organization, physical facilities and equipment, clinical resources, library and information resources, programs and curriculum, admissions policies, faculty qualifications and research programs. The standards are interpreted and applied by the COE to each college in relation to its mission.
“We are very proud of the fact that the College of Veterinary Medicine continues to be awarded full accreditation,” said Dean Sheila W. Allen. “Full accreditation means that the AVMA recognizes that our college is meeting all the standards required for educating veterinarians. These high standards are quite comprehensive and are put in place to ensure that D.V.M. graduates receive the training needed to protect and preserve animal and human health.”
The accreditation process takes about one year. This includes a six-month self-study which is reviewed by the site team prior to a five-day visit to the college. After the visit, the site team files a report to the AVMA COE, and six to nine months later the COE votes on whether to award full accreditation or limited accreditation.
“The site visit team looks at everything in the college that relates to D.V.M. student instruction,” Allen said. “They conduct extensive interviews of faculty, staff and students, and evaluate programs to determine that our students are receiving the best professional veterinary training possible.”
The accreditation review occurs every seven years for accredited colleges of veterinary medicine.
“The entire College of Veterinary Medicine community pulled together to demonstrate our commitment to educating tomorrow’s veterinarians,” Allen said. “The site team members were impressed by our dedication and collegiality, and recommended full accreditation.”
