Community Involvement

High School Mentoring Program

The mentoring program is for high school students interested in a career in veterinary medicine. UGA vet students visit Athens area high schools each year to discuss the various career options available to veterinarians. A forum has been established in order for students to write in with questions about veterinary school. The site is updated weekly by veterinary students. Please visit the website to post questions and read about upcoming events at the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine.

Please click here to go to the forum, hosted on Google Groups.

Josh and Friends

Josh and Friends is a program that was developed by Dr. Randy Lang, DVM, to prepare children for surgery using the human-animal bond. Dr. Lang wrote “I’ll Be OK,” a story about a friendly golden retriever named Josh. Josh has surgery and discusses each aspect of his experience in a child-oriented, non-threatening style.

Since the inception of the program, Dr. Lang has solicited the help of veterinary schools throughout the U.S. in purchasing and distributing Josh and Friends kits to local hospitals. The UGA SCAVMA chapter has recently formed a partnership with Children’s Hospital of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. We are in the process of raising funds to purchase kits for the hospital. If you are interested in learning more, please visit www.joshandfriends.com.

Ahisma House

The Ahimsa House is the first and only shelter in Georgia to provide safe and confidential care for animal victims of domestic violence. During the animals’ stay under Ahimsa custody, the pets receive free housing and basic veterinary care as well as secure visitations with their families.

The UGA SCAVMA chapter encourages the important service Ahimsa House provides to promote the human-animal bond. UGA veterinary students support Ahimsa’s efforts by offering caring foster homes and providing veterinary and pet transportation assistance. Please visit the Ahimsa House Web site for more information and to learn how you can become involved.

Road Sponsorship

The UGA College of Veterinary Medicine believes in environmental awareness and the students have adopted an Athens road as part of the Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful Campaign. The UGA SCAVMA chapter is proud to be doing their part to beautify the city and isn’t afraid to get a little dirty to keep Athens’ streets clean. Feel free to lend a hand on our next tour of duty.
