Since 1991, the veterinarians of the combined clinics of Animal Hospital of Bedford, Brownstown Animal Hospital, Jackson County Animal Clinic, and St Clair Veterinary Clinic have invested well over 2 million dollars with minimal business training. Having worked with several practice consultants and business managers, we have decided to start the first Veterinary Business and Management Externship program. We hope to train junior and senior veterinary students the reality of practice management and develop students to see the positives of practice ownership. We will use real practice financials, demographic numbers, legal contracts, financial audits, employee handbooks, facility designs, etc. to train and empower veterinary students with the tools they all should understand prior to leaving veterinary school. We will have models and will discuss all casually with an open type format. Training Modules 1. Practice leadership, mentors, management 2. Client and personnel management 3. Practice Computer programming, digital everything 4. Marketing your practice and your profession 5. Buying and Starting your first practice 6. Legal pitfalls, malpractice, personal protection 7. Fee setting and collection 8. Staff utilization- Practice managers, associates, receptionists, technicians, assistants 9. Inventory control, prescriptions, equipment 10. Practice Financials The above represents a general outline of the Externship. We are flexible if a student wants 50% small, mixed, or large animal practice time and 50% business training time we will provide that. The housing provided is adjacent to Brownstown Animal Hospital Inc. A weekly stipend of $50 will be provided for students at this time. The veterinary student may be asked to assist with emergencies as they occur, but this by no means is mandatory. Summary Over the last 20 years, we have trained a multitude of students to hopefully become veterinarians. We enjoy students and we enjoy teaching. We currently have 2 veterinarians on staff that received student training in our system. We hope to assist new graduates in the essentials of business management, locating a good practice, and even purchasing a practice if someday they desire. Dr. Ron Harrison Dr. Klent Brown |
