Course information

Prerequisites: Admission to Vet School

Objectives:
The purpose of this course is to provide the veterinary students with a basic knowledge of the mechanisms of immunity in animals. The course will consist of a description of the components of the immune system including the different types of immune responses and the mechanisms by which the immune system provides protection against foreign invaders. The consequences of exaggerated immunity, the failure of immunoregulation and the factors affecting immune responses to vaccines will also be covered.

Topical outline:
At the successful completion of this course, the students should be able to discuss the following topics: - General principles of an immune response. - Types of immunity and the organs/cells responsible for such response. - Generation of an immune response to infectious agents. - Regulation of the immune response. - The immune system in health and disease: i.e. hypersensitivities, autoimmunity and immune deficiencies. - Immunodiagnostic procedures and practices. - Principles of vaccination.

Students will only address instructors during examinations. No communication amongst studenta will be allowed.
