  • Principal course assignments:

  • This clerkship is individually tailored to student’s interests in clinical pathology. The material offered may cover cytology, hematology, urinalysis, and biochemical data interpretation in any combination. Any desired species emphasis may be accommodated.

  • Specific course requirements for grading purposes:

  • Satisfactory participation in all diagnostic sessions and completions of follow-up reports on assigned cases is required. The student wil complete an individual, web-based, continuing education project

  • Grading policy:

  • The final grade is pass/fail based on evaluation of laboratory participation and completion of continuing education project.

  • Attendance policy:

  • Attendance is mandatory at all class meetings. Excused absences may be made up at the discretion of the participating clinical pathologist.

  • Objectives:

  • 1. To interpret hematologic and cytologic preparations. 2. To interpret laboratory data sheets. 3. To logically select and use laboratory tests. 4. To become familiar with the current literature related to clinical pathology. 5. To become familiar with major clinical pathology textbooks. 6. To complete an individual, web-based, continuing education project. Projects that have been completed may be viewed at the following URL:

  • Topical outline:

  • 1. Microscopic evaluation of blood smears. 2. Microscopic evaluation of cytology preparations. 3. Determination and use of reference intervals. 4. Interpretation of laboratory data sheets. 5. Rational selection of laboratory tests. 6. Survey of current clinical pathology literature

  • Details of authorized assistance allowed during examinations:

  • If authorized assistance is allowed (such as open book examinations), it should be so stipulated in detail. If faculty allow reference materials to be used during examinations, it is recommended that the syllabus sate that students cannot share any materials (references, calculators, etc.) during examinations. Finally, if review of previously administered examination contents is not allowed, it should be so stated in the syllabus.
