Clinical Pathology Clerkship
VPAT-5402
Overview: This clerkship is individually tailored to student’s interests in clinical pathology. The material offered may cover cytology, hematology, urinalysis, and biochemical data interpretation in any combination. Any desired species emphasis may be accommodated.
Prerequisites: The clinical pathology clerkship is restricted to current professional DVM students that have taken and passed VPAT-5250 (sophomore Veterinary Clinical Pathology) or its equivalent at another College or School of Veterinary Medicine.
Objectives:
1. To interpret hematologic and cytologic preparations.
2. To interpret laboratory data sheets.
3. To logically select and use laboratory tests.
4. To become familiar with the current literature related to clinical pathology.
5. To become familiar with major clinical pathology textbooks.
6. To complete an individual, web-based, continuing education project. Projects that

Daily Schedule (subject to change):
8:00 AM – 10:00 AM Research literature, review daily case materials, and work on
web-based project.
10:00 AM – 11:00 AM Review individual topics with clinical pathologist.
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Review prepared hematology and cytology case materials with
clinical pathologist and other senior students.
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM Lunch.
1:00 PM – 5:00 PM Review Teaching Hospital accessions with clinical pathologist.
Potential Daily Topical Outline:
1. Microscopic evaluation of blood smears.
2. Microscopic evaluation of cytology preparations.
3. Determination and use of reference intervals.
4. Interpretation of laboratory data sheets.
5. Rational selection of laboratory tests.
6. Survey of current clinical pathology literature.
Duration of Clerkship: The clerkship may be accomplished in a 1-week or 2-week block of time.
Credit Hours: 1.3 credit hours per week for 40 hours of training. Maximum credit allowed is 2.6 credits for a 2-week training experience.
Grading System: S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory)
Attendance: Attendance is mandatory at all class meetings. Excused absences may be made up at the discretion of the participating clinical pathologist.
