Required elements

  • Principal course assignments:

  • 1. Weekdays: Necropsy laboratory runs from 1 to 5 PM or until cases are complete and the lab is clean. Students will assist in laboratory cleanup. a. Pre necropsy conference will begin daily at 1:00 PM in room 171. b. Necropsy rounds will be held daily at 4:00 PM in room 176 (AQS room). c. Visits to the Athens Diagnostic Laboratory are scheduled for 9:00 AM in the mornings. d. Microscopic findings will be reviewed with the pathologist on duty.

  • Specific course requirements for grading purposes:

  • 1. Complete and submit all necropsy reports 2. Complete 2 full case reports including gross and microscopic findings.

  • Grading policy:

  • Course grading is pass/fail. A grade of “incomplete” (“I”) will be reported when appropriate. Participation in the laboratory and all written reports will be evaluated.

  • Attendance policy:

  • Attendance is required. Absences must be approved and made up. Until the absences are made up, a grade of “I” (incomplete) will be reported for the course.

  • Policy for make-up of examinations:

  • There are no examininations. Evaluation is based on written reports.

Course information

  • Prerequisites:

  • Permission of the department

  • Objectives:

  • A. Perform necropsies and write gross pathology reports B. Order ancillary tests as needed to obtain a definitive diagnosis C. Perform microscopic examinations on 2 cases. D. Assimilate findings from the above into a final diagnostic report.

  • 1. Safety in the laboratory 2. Necropsy techniques 3. Evaluation gross lesions 4. Microscopic lesions 5. Case assimilation

  • Details of authorized assistance allowed during examinations:

  • If authorized assistance is allowed (such as open book examinations), it should be so stipulated in detail. If faculty allow reference materials to be used during examinations, it is recommended that the syllabus sate that students cannot share any materials (references, calculators, etc.) during examinations. Finally, if review of previously administered examination contents is not allowed, it should be so stated in the syllabus.
