Clinical rotation on oncology service. Students will be graded on patient care, enthusiasm for participating on the oncology service, reliability with assigned responsibilities, ability to communicate with members of the oncology service and owners of veterinary cancer patients, and demonstrated effort to improve knowledge base regarding cases on the service (i.e. reading to prepare for cases). Grading on this service is pass/fail. Attendance is mandatory. Permission must be obtained from the office of the Dean of Academic Affairs to miss a day of this rotation. SAMS 5202 This rotation seeks to offer clinical experience in the management of canine and feline patients with cancer. Students rotating on the oncology service will work closely with Dr. Nicole Northrup or Dr. Tracy Gieger to stage cancers, determine treatment options and prognoses, and make recommendations to owners. Students will be exposed to new patients and patients already undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. Participation in daily case rounds and consultations for other services is expected. Time will be made available for students to assist skilled technicians in chemotherapy administration and learn safe handling and administration of chemotherapy. The oncology receiving schedule follows: Monday 9:30 AM New Appointment 10:30 AM New Appointment 11:30 AM Hold – Approval only by Oncologist (ie new appt) 12:30 PM Radiation recheck 1:00 PM Radiation recheck Tuesday Chemotherapy Rechecks – 6 Patients Drop off between 8 and 9 AM Wednesday 9:30 AM New Appointment 10:30 AM New Appointment 11:30 AM Hold – Approval only by Oncologist (ie new appt) 12:30 PM Radiation recheck 1:00 PM Radiation recheck Thursday Chemotherapy Rechecks – 6 Patients Drop off between 8 and 9 AM Friday No Appointments – teaching, work-up, catch up day Technicians Mon/Wed/Fri Radiation therapy Tues/Thurs Chemotherapy
If authorized assistance is allowed (such as open book examinations), it should be so stipulated in detail. If faculty allow reference materials to be used during examinations, it is recommended that the syllabus sate that students cannot share any materials (references, calculators, etc.) during examinations. Finally, if review of previously administered examination contents is not allowed, it should be so stated in the syllabus. |
