COURSE DESCRIPTION

Clinical training in food animal practice with a focus on disease and performance concerns. 

Objectives

Upon completion of the course the successful student should be able to:

Recognize clinical signs of both infectious and management related disease as seen in beef cattle, dairy cattle, and swine. 

Prescribe appropriate diagnostic tests for diagnosing infectious and management related disease.

Describe the economic impact of disease and interventions using probability outcomes.

Describe the dynamics and diagnostics of population immunity .

Prescribe management options that minimize expression of indigenous disease.

design segregation options based on age, site, flow

outline the major factors to be considered in designing a vaccination program.

design management protocol manuals to be used by farm personnel

Prescribe herd-level disease elimination options.

test and cull

depopulation/repopulation

flow cessation

Prescribe a biosecurity program that prevents the introduction disease into a herd with a focus on:

vectors

barriers

facilities

people

isolation/acclimatization

Prescribe sanitation and hygiene procedures for animal facilities, with a focus on:

disinfectant selection

external factors affecting selection

Prescribe mass medication including:

feed additives

drinking water antimicrobics.

Be familiar with record keeping systems and record analysis in dairy systems

ACADEMIC HONESTY

Students are expected to abide by the academic honesty policies as outlined by the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine.

GRADING SYSTEM

Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory

Students will develop at least one case study and present it to the Production Medicine faculty and the other students participating in the rotation.

REPEAT POLICY

Course can be repeated for credit – maximum credit allowed 8 hours

REQUIRED PREREQUISITES

Completion of 3rd year veterinary curriculum

TOPICAL OUTLINE:

Clinical instruction in food animal practice with a focus on 1) the dynamics of disease within individuals and populations of animals and 2) discovery and resolution of production concerns.  Students will gain exposure to beef, dairy, and swine practice situations and will be integrally involved in the resolution of “real world” problems.
