Course information
Prerequisites: Completion of 1st year DVM curriculum
Objectives:
To introduce veterinary students to the specialty of laboratory animal
medicine. This course is intended to be a broad overview to include biology,
husbandry and diseases of common laboratory animals; animal welfare issues;
regulatory and compliance concerns; animal models; anesthesia and analgesia;
health monitoring and diagnostics; ethics; and animal facility design.
Topical outline:
Introduction; animal models; mouse I, II, III; rat I, II; rabbit; guinea
pig; primate I, II; hamster, gerbil, other rodents; pathology; diagnostics;
facility design
Students are expected to abide by the academic honesty policies and guidelines
