Course information
Prerequisites: none
Objectives:
1. Make students aware of the resource materials (journals, books, CD-ROMs
etc) that are available. Course notes will be made available.
2.
To encourage students to read the course notes, review the reference list,
and investigate and research areas of avian and reptile medicine for
discussion in class.
3.
Prepare the student for elective clinical rotations in exotic animal medicine
and later general or exotic animal practice.
4.
To make exotic animal medicine interesting! J
Topical outline:
This course concentrates on the following aspects of avian and reptile
species: 1. Husbandry and management. 2. Reproduction 3. Disease diagnosis 4.
Medical and surgical therapy 5. Emergency and critical care The material will
be presented using slide (and video) illustrated lectures, and time will be
given at the end of each lecture for questions. All participants are
encouraged to be proactive and ask questions.
Provisional
lecture schedule is as follows; 1 Intro & Reptile anatomy and physiology;
2 Reptile husbandry; 3 Reptile physical examination; 4 Reptile diagnostic
techniques; 5 Reptile diagnostic imaging; 6 Reptile non-infectious diseases;
7 Reptile infectious diseases; 8 Reptile infectious diseases; 9 Reptile
therapeutics; 10 Reptile anesthesia & Surgery; 11 Avian Anatomy and
Physiology; 12 Avian husbandry & nutrition; 13 Avian physical
examination; 14 Avian diagnostic techniques; 15 Avian anesthesia &
surgery; 16 Avian diagnostic imaging; 17 Avian non-infectious diseases; 18
Avian non-infectious diseases; 19 Avian infectious diseases; 20 Avian
infectious diseases; 21 Avian & Reptile reproduction & neonatology;
22 Avian & Reptile emergency & critical care; 23 Avian & Reptile
Endoscopy
Students are expected to abide by the academic honesty policies and

Details of authorized assistance allowed during examinations:
There are 3 exams for this course; 2 quizzes (20 points) 1 final (computer
based exam) examination (80 points) All tests are closed book.
All academic work must meet the standards contained in 'A Culture of
Honesty'. Each student is responsible to inform themselves about those
standards before performing any academic work.
