Prerequisites: DVM student

Objectives:
A. To develop an understanding of basic epidemiologic concepts and methods B. To develop an understanding of basic preventive medicine principles and practices used in public and veterinary health C. To understand the veterinarian’s role and obligations in existing epidemiologic surveillance, public health, and animal health programs

Topical outline:
I. Epidemiologic concepts and methodology: A. Host-Agent-Environmental Complex B. Concepts of pathogen transmission and maintenance C. Principles of disease surveillance D. Describing disease frequency E. Identifying and measuring risk factors F. Diagnostic test evaluation G. Sampling methods and bias H. Epidemiologic study designs I. Molecular and landscape epidemiology II. Preventive medicine A. Principles of preventive medicine B. Food safety C. Foreign animal diseases D. Zoonoses E. Bio- and agroterrorism F. Wildlife, livestock, companion animal, and human health interactions
