  • Make-up examinations will be administered only for medical or personal reasons beyond the student's control and must have the approval of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, College of Veterinary Medicine.

Course information

  • Prerequisites:

  • Completion of year 1 in vet medicine

  • Objectives:

  • Develop a core understanding of disease conditions commonly encountered in pigs. The course will cover the major infectious, toxin-induced, and parasite disease conditions affecting pigs. Upon completion of the course the successful student should be able to diagnose specific disease conditions and prescribe indicated remedies.

  • Topical outline:

  • Neonatal digestive disease: Colibacillosis, Enterotoxemia, Transmissible Gastroenteritis, Rotavirus, Coccidiosis, Strongyloides, Agalactia, Hypothermia Post-weaning digestive disease: Edema disease, Nutritional maladies (zinc deficiencies, soy-hypersensitivity, behavioral disorders) Grower and adult associated digestive diseases: Swine Dysentery, Porcine Proliferative Enteritis (Ileitis), Gastric Ulcers, Salmonellosis, Trichuris, Hemorrhagic Bowel Syndrome (HBS), Respiratory disease: Atrophic Rhinitis, Bullnose, Cytomegalovirus, Salmonella cholerasuis, Actinobacillus pleuropneumonia, Pseudorabies, PRRS, Influenza, Porcine Respiratory Corona Virus, PMWS (Porcine Cirovirus 2), Mycoplasma hyopneumonia, Pasteurellosis, Mycobacteriosis Reproductive disease: Parvovirus, Leptospirosis, Brucellosis, PRRS, Influenza, TGE, Seasonality CNS disease: Streptococcus suis, Salt Poisoning, Shaker Pigs Syndrome, EEE, EMC, Edema Disease Blood-borne disease: Eperythrozoonosis Integumentary disease: Greasy pig, Pityrasis rosea, Erysipelas, Swine pox, Vesicular disease, Zinc deficiency induced hyperkaratosis, Sarcoptic mange, Ringworm, Agalactia, Mastitis Musculoskeletal disease: Staph arthritis, Strep arthritis, Mycoplasma hyosynoviae, Erysipelas, OCD Polystemic disease: Hemophilus parasuis, PRRS, PRV, PMWS, African Swine Fever, Classical Swine Fever Toxin-induced disease: Mycotoxins (alfatoxin, vomitoxin, zeralenone, fumonison) Parasitic disease: Ascarasis, Trichuris, Nodular worms, Kidney worms, Strongyloides, Coccidiosis. Miscellaneous disease: Pyelonephritis, Porcine Stress Syndrome, Preweaning mortality,. Disease Management Issues: Surgery, Anesthesia, Venipuncture

  • Calculator use during examinations is permited allowed though sharing is not allowed. Review of previously administered examination contents is not allowed.
