Equine Internal Medicine: Digestive Diseases

Course Description:      This 10 contact hour lecture course will utilize a case presentation and management discussion format.  This course will serve as a continuation of the material presented earlier this semester in the Digestive Diseases of Large Animals core course and will especially focus on the presenting complaint of equine abdominal pain, the most frequent reason for a large animal emergency call.  The purpose of the course is to review material presented in the core course, to expand on the core material, and to provide clinically relevant (real life) case discussion.   The material presented in this elective would be suitable for students interested in a mixed animal, equine, or large animal exclusive track.

Prerequisite:      LAMS 5350 Digestive Diseases of Large Animals core

Objectives:   The main objective of this course is to review the topic of equine abdominal pain, in a case presentation format.   To facilitate case discussion, the student should be able to:

1.         Recall the normal  function and pathophysiology of the equine digestive tract.

2.         Recognize clinical signs and physical findings of digestive tract diseases of horses.

3.         Understand the basic diagnostics tests used for identifying the cause of equine abdominal pain.

4.         Be able to generate a list of differential diagnoses for acute and chronic equine abdominal pain.

5.         Know the treatments and prognosis for the most common causes of equine abdominal pain.

6.         Know when to send a horse to a referral institution for additional diagnostics or treatment for equine abdominal pain.

Examination

Course Assignments: none required

Course Requirements and Grading:   This course will include one examination.  An unexcused absence from the examination will constitute a failing grade.  Excused absence from an examination will result in an incomplete in the course until the examination can be taken (date and time to be agreed upon by the instructor and student).  Grades will be assigned according to the following (100 points) as follows:  A=90 to 100%, B=80 to 89%, C=70 to 79%, D= 60 to 69%, Fail<60%.  Students are expected to abide by the academic honesty policies and guidelines outlined in the College of Veterinary Medicine Code of Conduct.  Students cannot share any materials during examination.   If your  score on the examination is a failing grade, you may retake the test.  With a passing score on retest, the highest grade that may be received for the course is a D.

Attendance is required for the examination.  Attendance is required for lectures. 

Required course material:  No textbook is required, however required reading may be provided.
