Dr. Mark Jackwood named Head, Population Health Department

The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine has appointed Mark W. Jackwood, a molecular virologist known for his work in avian diseases, to head its Department of Population Health. The department includes the College’s Food Animal Management program, Laboratory Animal veterinarians, as well as two significant areas of public service and outreach: the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center (PDRC) and the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (SCWDS).

Five Distinguished Alumni awards and one Young Achiever award were presented during a luncheon at the 48th Annual Veterinary Conference and Alumni Weekend at the Classic Center, Athens, Ga. on Saturday, March 26, 2011.

A student-led and faculty-supported volunteer outreach project, from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, was recently recognized for its efforts to heighten awareness about the link between animal abuse and domestic violence, and to provide help to victims who own companion animals.

"Vets for Pets and People" was named "Advocate of the Year" for 2010 by the Domestic Violence Task Force of Athens-Clarke and Oconee Counties.
