University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine researchers find protein that plays key role in reproductive health
Note: All images copyright Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania 2010.
Read the reproductive health press release here.
Figure 1: High resolution image of chromosomes of an early mouse embryo during the first mitotic cell division. The primary constriction of chromosomes, the centromeres, are labeled with a marker that distinguishes between sister centromeres (bright pink and blue). Loss of ATRX protein causes chromosome breaks within centromeres (arrow) leading to instability of the genome and aneuploidy. The scale bar indicates the magnification and represents 5 micrometers. All images copyright Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania 2010.
Figure 2: Loss of ATRX protein in the mammalian egg results in numerical chromosome aberrations (aneuploidy) in the early embryo. (A) High-resolution image of a normal chromosome spread (40 chromosomes) from a control mouse embryo during the first cell division post-fertilization. (B) Aneuploidy (41 chromosomes) in a stage-matched embryo lacking ATRX protein. The scale bar indicates 5 micrometers. All images copyright Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania 2010.
Movie 1 – control: [.mov format] Time-lapse live cell imaging of a normal mouse egg during meiotic maturation. Cell division proceeds normally and chromosomes (green) align properly at the metaphase II plate (final time point). All images copyright Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania 2010.
Movie 2 – ATRX: [.mov format] Time-lapse live cell imaging during meiotic maturation of a stage-matched mouse egg lacking ATRX. Chromosomes are shown in green. Distribution of genetic material during cell division is impaired, leading to a scattering of chromosomes and aneuploidy in the mature egg. All images copyright Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania 2010.
