Advanced Studies in Infectious Diseases—IDIS 8010
Analysis of various infectious disease agents, including representative helminths, protozoa, fungi, bacteria, viruses, and prions. The epidemiology, pathogenesis, host immune response, disease transmission, treatment, and control will be presented for each highlighted infectious disease.

Helminthology—IDIS 8030
The morphology, life histories, classification, and parasitic relationship of the helminthes. Emphasis is placed on recent advances in helminthology research.

Problems in Parasitology—IDIS 8050
Parasitic diseases of birds and mammals. Nature of the studies determined by the Parasitic diseases of birds and mammals. Nature of the studies deteremined by the student's major field of interest.

Advanced MolecularTechniques —IDIS 8080L
Current techniques in molecular biology that are broadly applicable with infectious disease research. Topics include bioinformatics and phylogenetic analysis, genotyping and mutation detection, DNA and RNA isolation and analysis, quantitative real-time PCR and RNAi.

Virology and Viral Pathogenesis VPAT(IDIS)—8150
Basic virology and the pathogenic mechanisms of some of the most important human and animal viral pathogens. Offered in the Fall semester every other year.

Seminar in Infectious Diseases—IDIS 8160
Semi-formal meetings for discussion of research and new developments in the field. Attendance is required of all Infectious Diseases graduate students.

Global Perspectives on Tropical and Emerging Infectious Diseases—IDIS (MIBO) 8260
Global status, epidemiology and control of parasitic, viral, and bacterial diseases of major public health importance. Emphasis will be on the scientific, policy, and economic aspects of past, current, and future public health approaches to deal with these globally challenging infectious diseases from multiple and integrative perspectives.

Special Topics in Parasitology—IDIS 8250
Published research and new developments in the study of parasites, their hosts and vectors.

Advanced Immunology II—IDIS 8300
Molecular immunology of signal transduction; T-cell, B-cell and NK cell regulation by MHC class I and II antigens; mechanisms of apoptosis; peptide processing and presentation. Lectures presented from recent research literature. Laboratory encourages graduate student involvement of their own research, with emphasis on flow cytometry and other analytical approaches.

Principles and Research Applications of Flow Cytometry—IDIS 8350
Theory and research applications of flow cytometry. Flow cytometry as it relates to immunophenotyping, cell cycle analysis, innovative procedures measuring apoptosis, and simultaneous four color analysis. Students will become independent regarding instrumentation, collection of data, analysis, etc. Hands-on experience will be obtained utilizing state-of-the-art instruments.

Areas of lecture include: 1) unifying principles of the science of virus; 2) molecular biology of viral genomes and viral structures; 3) mechanisms of attachment, entry, and genome replication; 4) transcription and replication strategies; 5) dissemination, virulence, and epidemiology; 6) virus-host interactions; 7) transformation and oncogenesis; and 8) virus control and evolution.
